Potatoes USA teams with school nutrition group

The Denver Omelet Brunch Bowl is just one of many examples of how potatoes fit in nutritious breakfasts at school cafeterias.

Partnering with school foodservice at breakfast is one way Potatoes USA is encouraging students to become healthier and fit. In a recent Industry Update, the organization announced its partnership with the School Nutrition Association to sponsor National School Breakfast Week during March 6-10, 2017.

According to the update: Busy weekday mornings make it a challenge for families to find time for a healthy breakfast. However, USDA data show that more students are starting their day with a nutritious breakfast in their school cafeterias. Recognizing this important development, the School Nutrition Association has stepped up to promote the importance of breakfasts in school.

Potatoes USA is also working with school foodservice to include potatoes as a part of this most important meal, to help students start their fun-filled days of learning off right, helping them to feel fuller longer which keeps their focus in the classroom. Potatoes USA joins Kellogg Company as a sponsor of National School Breakfast Week. They now have the opportunity to influence thousands of schools across the country and become a recognized source for information and recipes.

School foodservice operators are encouraged to get creative in the kitchen with fresh, frozen and/or dehydrated potatoes. Potatoes USA is inviting school foodservice professionals across the country to submit their most creative, potato-centric school breakfast recipes to the “Wake Up with Potatoes!” recipe contest. Potatoes are a popular vegetable in school cafeterias as they are cost-effective, nutritious and students love them. Potatoes also deliver an unbeatable ROI for school foodservice programs, including the USDA’s School Breakfast Program which serves more than 14 million children every school day.

Please share the contest information with your state school representatives and look forward to more delicious breakfast potato recipes to come. For more information on the Potatoes USA School Foodservice program contact Rachael Lynch at [email protected].
