USDA awards nearly $3.6 million in block grants for U.S. potato industry

USDA announced nearly $73 million in FY22 grants to support specialty crops, including $3,569,579 for potato industry programs and research through the Specialty Crop Block Grant Program (SCBGP).

The SCBGP funding supports farmers growing specialty crops, including fruits, vegetables, tree nuts, and nursery crops. USDA’s support is designed to strengthen U.S. specialty crop production and markets to promote healthy eating by all Americans.

This year’s grants include: funding for Colorado and Idaho to market potatoes in the interior of Mexico; preemptively managing potato production under extreme heat and water stress in Washington state; developing variable rate nitrogen and water management strategies in Minnesota; and managing soil-borne diseases through integrated soil improvement in Maine. The full list of potato-related grants is available here.
