NPC endorses Roberts-Stabenow GMO legislation

The National Potato Council (NPC) issued a press release supporting legislation released by Senate Agriculture Chairman Pat Roberts (R-Kansas) and ranking member Debbie Stabenow (D-Michigan) establishing a national disclosure standard for bioengineered foods.

If passed, the legislation preempts all state labeling laws related to the labeling of genetically modified food and uses a definition of genetic engineering that NPC supports.

The legislation requires the secretary of USDA to establish a national mandatory bioengineered food disclosure standard with respect to any bioengineered food and any food that may be bioengineered.”

“This is a timely and important step forward in the labeling discussion, as it would prevent a patchwork of confusing state laws,” NPC CEO John Keeling said in the press release. “We thank the senators for their hard work on this bipartisan legislation and urge the Senate to vote on it next week.”
