Fourth-generation fresh potato and vegetable supplier Bushwick Commission has been designated a historic business by the New York State Historic Business Preservation Registry.
Bushwick was chosen for its 90-year legacy of service, commitment to the communities it serves its and resilience, according to the news release.
Starting as a modest produce stand with pushcarts in the Bushwick neighborhood of Brooklyn, the company has expanded to become a major supplier of potatoes and other vegetables to the Atlantic seaboard.
“We are deeply honored to be named to the New York State Historic Business Preservation Registry,” Ken Gray, Bushwick Commission vice president of sales & marketing, said in the release. “This award would not have been possible without the hard work and dedication of those who came before us. We carry their legacy with us every day as we continue to serve our customers and community.”
The award recognizes businesses with a long-standing history of significant contributions to local communities. New York State Assemblyman Steven Stern presented Bushwick with a proclamation and wrote a letter of support for the company.
“For nearly nine decades, they (Bushwick) have remained committed to being a leader and not only growing and supplying fresh produce but being a pillar in their community with regular donations to communities in need, including the Island Harvest Food Bank and the VA hospital,” Stern wrote.
