Georgia vegetable growers grapple with hurricane’s aftermath

Hurricane Helene has caused extensive damage to Georgia’s agriculture, hitting vegetable growers in the southeastern region especially hard.

The Georgia Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association (GFVGA) has begun assessing damage and collecting data. Members are encouraged to reach out to local Extension offices at this link.

GFVGA staff will begin visiting growers in affected areas beginning Oct. 3, according to the organization.

To assist with disaster recovery efforts, growers are advised to document their damage with photos, GPS points and descriptions. The USDA’s Emergency Conservation Program (ECP) may offer funds and technical assistance for farms severely impacted by the storm. For more details on enrolling in the ECP, click here.

For additional guidance, contact the USDA Farm Service Agency at 706-546-2266. Several county offices remain closed due to storm damage.

Resources

On the federal level, there are several entities that can provide assistance:

USDA’s Disaster Assistance programs

USDA Emergency Conservation Program (ECP)

USDA Tree Assistance Program (TAP)

USDA Emergency Forest Restoration Program (EFRP)

Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA)

Small Business Administration (SBA)

For individuals that require assistance with FEMA applications, there is information available online. Additionally, growers can turn to local and state resources for assistance and guidance.
