Canadian company successfully registers 4 true potato seed varieties

Tuberosum Technologies has successfully registered four true potato seed varieties, marking the first time TPS varieties have been officially registered in Canada.

The tetraploid TPS varieties will offer producers a more efficient, cost-effective and environmentally friendly method of cultivation, according to the company. True potato seeds offer improved disease resilience, easier storage, reduced transportation/phytosanitary constraints and a more flexible supply chain as compared to traditional tuber-based potato propagation, the company said in a news release.

“We are incredibly proud to pioneer the introduction of true potato seeds in Canada,” Joel Van Der Schaaf, CEO of Tuberosum Technologies, said in the release. “This milestone represents years of dedicated research and collaboration. Our new TPS varieties will provide the potato industry with innovative tools to improve crop quality, accessibility and sustainability.  This official registration is one of the first of its kind globally and is a pivotal step in making the potato — the most-efficient major food crop — vastly more efficient.”

Tuberosum Technologies is a potato breeding and variety development company headquartered in Saskatchewan. Last September, it became a Silver Sustaining Partner of the World Potato Congress.

Tuberosum worked with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency’s Variety Registration Office to register the varieties.
