2012 Potato Industry Leadership Institute Dates Announced

The 2012 Potato Industry Leadership Institute (PILI) will be held February 23-March 1, 2012. The Institute is an eight-day program designed to identify, develop and cultivate new leaders within the potato industry. The Institute focuses on leadership development, public policy, marketing, trade, team building, public communication, presentation skills and more.

The 2012 Institute will begin in Rochester, NY, where participants will receive an overview of the US potato industry, including domestic and international marketing. Participants will have the unique opportunity to tour local production, processing and retail facilities. The group will then travel to Washington, DC, where the focus will move to national legislative and regulatory priorities for the US potato industry and skills training. Training sessions include presentation skills, leadership development, media training, and lobbying skills.

“I personally got a broader understanding of the potato industry as a whole, giving me a greater desire to become more involved,” commented Rex Calloway, grower from Quincy, WA, and elected grower leader of the 2011 Institute. “The benefits gained from the Potato Industry Leadership Institute will enhance my lifelong learning. The challenges facing the potato industry can present opportunities for those who are proactive.”

Participants are selected through state organization nominations and a committee facilitated by the National Potato Council (NPC) and the United States Potato Board (USPB), who jointly coordinate the program. The Institute receives a major sponsorship from Syngenta, who has long been committed to leadership development in agriculture.
