Resistant pests can be present in all crops since some pests
are naturally tolerant to pesticides and can survive after an
application. When these pests reproduce, the tolerance is
passed on to subsequent populations, increasing the number
of resistant pests and the chance a pesticide will become
ineffective. Growers can overcome resistance issues by:
• Rotating different chemistries and modes of action
• Removing end-of-season crop residues
• Keeping a record of the products used and when they’re
applied to note any trends in pest pressure
• Following resistance recommendations from FRAC, IRAC
and HRAC
The Syngenta product portfolio helps growers manage resistance
by offering products with different modes of action. Growers can
use Platinum® 75SG, Voliam Flexi™ and Endigo® ZC insecticides
as part of an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program to
help ensure broad-spectrum control of aphids, potato leafhopper
and Colorado potato beetle. For late blight control, try rotating
Quadris® fungicide with Bravo Weather Stik® fungicide.
I’d like to congratulate this year’s participants of the Potato
Industry Leadership Institute (PILI), a program that identifies and
cultivates new potato industry leaders. Given the ever-increasing
demands on growers for exceptional crop quality and yield,
overcoming resistance issues is vital. By taking advantage
of great opportunities like the PILI, Syngenta can expand its
expertise in these approaches. |
