I planted into cool and wet soils this year and disease became an issue for me. What would you recommend for next season?

—Frazzled in Pau, Idaho

I recommend using a seed treatment fungicide such as Maxim® 4FS
and an in-furrow fungicide like Quadris® to protect potato seed and
seedlings from early-season diseases. Studies have shown when
these two treatments are combined, diseases caused by soil-borne
pathogens are signifi cantly reduced.

Maxim 4FS, with the active ingredient fl udioxonil, offers protection
against a broad spectrum of early-season diseases, including
Helminthosporium solani, the cause of silver scurf. Quadris fungicide,
with the active ingredient azoxystrobin, protects against soil-borne
diseases such as early blight. By using Maxim 4FS and Quadris,
growers have a highly effective management program to protect their
crops against most early-season diseases especially when less-than-ideal
environmental conditions occur at planting.

With this combination of products, plants are protected from day one
against disease. To continue disease management practices, the new
foliar fungicide, Revus Top™, can provide growers broad-spectrum
control of early and late blight during the growing season.
