UPGI releases 2014 potato acreage

The United Potato Growers of Idaho (UPGI) announced that Idaho growers have planted 321,462 acres of potatoes for 2014, a two percent increase from UPGI’s 2013 survey.

UPGI said that their counting teams drove over 13,000 miles and surveyed 3.1 million acres to reach the 2014 acreage count. The teams reviewed more than 116,000 fields. Teams must visually verify a field before recording its crop.

Following the count, UPGI conducted an audit to verify the accuracy of its findings. Teams audited 47,000 acres. Based on the audit, the UPGI report received an accuracy rate of 99.65 percent.
