Seed potato export protocol with Panama revised

U.S. Seed Potato exports to Panama will now to be traded under a newly signed U.S. Panama Seed Potato Market Access agreement.

This is a revised version of an existing protocol that clearly sets the phytosanitary conditions under which U.S. seed will be traded. The U.S. has had access for the past 12 years but the agreement was vague and inappropriately written in some areas, according to Potatoes USA.

Potatoes USA, the National Potato Council and BCI worked closely with USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service on the new pests of concern and mitigation measures to address them. The United States exported an estimated 480 tons of seed potatoes to Panama worth about $432,000 during the fiscal year July 2015-June 2016.
