Feb 15, 2012FCC suspends LightSquared’s conditional waiver
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) announced that it “will not lift the prohibition on LightSquared,” and will vacate the conditional waiver order allowing LightSquared to operate a nationwide ground-based, high-speed wireless network.
The FCC decision was based on a report by the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) stating “that there is no practical way to mitigate potential interference at this time.”
Critics of LightSquared’s proposal, including the military, John Deere and weather forecasters, complained that LightSquared’s operating system would interfere with GPS systems.
In response, LightSquared complained that the NTIA recommendation was based on flawed conclusions and that it “remains committed to finding a resolution with the federal government.”
