FAA proposes new UAS rules

The Department of Transportation’s Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is seeking public comment on proposed regulations for unmanned aircraft systems (UAS).

The proposed regulations are for UAS under 55 pounds conducting non-recreational operations. The provisions include: daylight only operations; visual line-of-sight only; maximum speed of 100 mph; maximum altitude of 500 feet above ground level. For a complete summary of the provisions, see the FAA website here.

The proposal also includes discussion of a more flexible framework for smaller UAS under 4.4 pounds.

Public comment on the proposed regulations will be for 60 days following publication in the Federal Register.
