EPA proposes stronger rules for certified applicators of RUPs

The EPA has proposed to revise the certification of pesticide applicators rule. The proposal would require more training and stronger certification standards for pesticide applicators who apply restricted-use pesticides (RUPs).

The EPA proposal would require all RUP applicators to be at least 18 years old. An applicator’s certification would have to be renewed every three years.

The EPA also is proposing additional specialized licensing for fumigation and aerial application.

RUPs are not available for purchase by the general public. They require special handling and may be applied only by a certified applicator or someone working under the certified applicator’s direct supervision.

To download a copy of the proposal, visit this website. To see a list of RUPs visit this website.

A 90-day public comment period will begin when the proposal is published in the Federal Register. To comment on the proposed changes visit this website and search for docket number EPA-HQ-OPP-2011-0183.
