Cañon Potato closing

Cañon Potato has announced that it is closing and plans to sell its assets to MountainKing Potatoes.

Cañon, based in Center, Colo., has been in the business of shipping fresh potatoes since 1947. In 1952 the company moved from Cañon, Colo. to Center in the San Luis Valley.

David Tonso, co-owner and acting CEO of Cañon, blamed the company’s demise on the combination of decreasing water supply and decreasing potato acreage.

We were one of the last individual packing sheds in the area,” Tonso said. “We didn’t have our own acreage. All our supplies were coming from outside entities. It got tougher to find adequate supplies to make it profitable.”

The sale to MoutainKing is set to conclude on Sept.1.
