Heavy rain hits Northern Plains potatoes

Heavy rain pounded the northern Red River Valley on Friday (June 17) morning causing additional damage to crops on fields that were already saturated. Wind and hail also caused some damage but excessive rain will be the big story when crop losses are tallied up in the coming weeks. 2015 N. American potato production increases

USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) reports that North American potato growers, United States and Canada, increased production in 2015 by 1.4 percent compared to 2014 production numbers. Production in 2015 totaled 550.4 million cwt., compared to 542.8 million cwt. in 2014. U.S. production increased 0.8 percent, and Canadian production increased 4.2 percent in 2015. McCain Foods USA to renovate Burley, Idaho plant

McCain Foods USA will begin a major capital improvement and renovation of its Burley 2 potato plant in Burley, Idaho. The project begins this fall and is scheduled for completion in two years. The Burley 2 facility was built in 1964 and produces a variety of straight cut, crinkle cut, coated and non-parfry potato products that are distributed across North America and exported to Asia.
