Two foodservice giants, Sysco and US Foods, to merge

Sysco and US Foods have agreed to merge, in a deal with a total enterprise value of approximately $8.2 billion. The merger has been approved by each company’s board of directors. The new company will retain the Sysco name and continue to be headquartered in Houston. Bill DeLaney, Sysco president and chief executive officer, will lead the new combined company. Freshway Foods has launched a new line of products for the school foodservice market, called Power Packs. Power Packs are individually packaged fresh-cut fruits and vegetables for schools participating in the USDA Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program. Three companies are each planning special events for the Produce Marketing Association (PMA) Foodservice Conference July 25-27 in Monterey, Calif. United praises new school snack standards

A new set of USDA standards called “Smart Snacks in School,” aimed at improving the nutritional quality of foods and beverages offered for sale to students in schools, was praised by the United Fresh Produce Association.
