Taking Stock: Honoring Young Leaders By Bill Schaefer

Exciting times here at Spudman. But before I discuss the big news I want to extend my thanks and gratitude to the Potato Association of America for presenting Spudman with an award for its half-century of service to the industry this past August at their annual meeting in Denver.

It’s an honor that we at Spudman and Great American Media Services accept with gratitude and take seriously as we continue to provide the potato industry with the most current news of the industry.

Now, as we kick-off our next 50 years of service to our readers I am proud to announce Spudman’s Emerging Leader Award.

This award has been created to recognize an individual, under the age of 35, involved in any sector of the potato industry, from growers and shippers to researchers and marketers.

Spudman believes that its time to recognize those individuals that will be leading the potato industry into the 21st century.

If you know of a man or woman who best represents the future direction of the potato industry I encourage you to nominate that individual for the Emerging Leader Award. Deadline for nominations is November 30.

This month’s issue takes us to the Big Sky country of Dillon, Montana where David Fairbourn profiles USPB member Steve Cottom and the Cottom seed potato operation.

For the past ten years Colorado State University’s Rob Davis and DeAnna Brown, have compiled the national seed potato acreage for Spudman. They’ve provided us with the statisitics again. Thanks, Rob and DeAnna for your diligence and perseverance.

We have a breakdown of the upcoming POTATO EXPO 2013 and some of the upcoming state potato conferences. Marnie Draper and I will be giving out work gloves at the POTATO EXPO in Las Vegas, Nev. Drop by and visit us at the Spudman booth.

As we close the curtain on 2012 I hope that 2013 proves to be a successful and profitable year for everyone.
