Taking Stock: New year, new challenges By Bill Schaefer

These are exciting times at Spudman and Great American Media Services so let’s cut to the chase and ring in the new year without delay.
First, I’m pleased to announce that with this issue you will be able to read the entire content of every future Spudman cover to cover online. Each article, photo, column and advertisement will be accessible online.
Over the course of time we will be expanding our online production to include additional features and graphic elements with the online issue. These features will include links to websites, expanded photo galleries and videos. As the online publishing world expands so will Spudman.
I also want to put in a plug for eSpudman, our monthly newsletter and our webinars. The newsletter is free for the asking. Just update your subscription online and you can begin receiving our monthly updates on industry innovations, market reports and industry spotlights. You’ll also receive email notices on upcoming webinars like the one we just had on soil fertility sponsored by Agro-Culture Liquid Fertilizers.
The other exciting news is the inaugural presentation of Spudman’s Emerging Leader Award at the NPC’s annual banquet in Las Vegas on January 11. You’ll have to be at the banquet or check online at Spudman.com after the banquet to find out who is the winner.
We’re introducing two new features to the magazine this year. One represents a follow-up to our Cultivar Corner, called Cultivar Update. Researchers will be discussing recently introduced varieties and what they’ve learned in the short time they’ve been commercially produced.
Our second new feature is a one-year celebration of the Potato Association of America’s centenary. In each issue Spudman will run a feature article on the preeminent potato research organization in the world.
It’s difficult to fathom where the industry would be without the focused dedication of PAA researchers in producing improved varieties and advancing better management practices over the past 100 years.
As always, I hope it’s a safe and profitable year for everyone and that you conquer all the challenges and obstacles that come your way in 2013.
