Spudman 7: Doug Cole

Doug Cole has been the director of marketing and communications for Simplot Plant Sciences since 2012. In this capacity, Cole is responsible for building industry and consumer acceptance for Innate, the world’s first biotech potato with consumer traits, which is now selling in the U.S. marketplace. Before Simplot, Cole worked in a number of senior brand and communication positions at Hewlett- Packard. He resides in Boise with his wife and two teenage sons.


What are the best words of advice you’ve received?

Live for the moment because everything else is uncertain.

What are your goals for the next 12 months?

Successfully launch Innate Gen. 2 potatoes into the U.S. marketplace and educate the industry and consumers on the benefits of blight resistance and cold storage.

What job or work would you have pursued if you had not become involved in the potato industry?

PR spokesman for a politician – good thing that didn’t happen.

What do you do to relax?

Running, swimming and biking. I know it sounds weird, but when you concentrate on the task at hand, it’s tough for your mind to wander.

What would you like to be your lasting legacy?

Helped to launch a more sustainable potato in Asia and Africa to make farming more productive while reducing hunger.

What are the top three things on your bucket list?

See a Cubs game at Wrigley Field, visit South America, compete in the Kona Ironman.

What is the one truth you’ve learned about the produce processing industry?

Relationships are everything.
